Gov. Babangida Aliyu of Niger has
dissuaded the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) from
making the killing of two students of Nasarawa State University
to degenerate into national problem.
Aliyu gave the advice on
Friday in Minna when he met with the NANS’ Director of Exchange
Programmes, Mr Olusina Oyebisi, who presented a document to him on the
issue.
According to him, if the issue is not resolved it may affect the entire education sector of the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN
recalls that two students of the university were allegedly killed by
soldiers, while protesting against water scarcity on the campus and its
environs on Feb. 25.
Aliyu, represented by his Chief of
Staff, Dr Joshua, advised NANS to embrace dialogue in resolving the
matter while assuring that he would delivered their message to the
appropriate quarters.
He commiserated with the staff members
and students of the university over the sad incident and prayed Allah to
 grant the departed eternal rest.
Earlier, Oyebisi urged President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure that those behind the killing of their colleagues were prosecuted.
He stressed the need for the Federal
Government to compensate the families of the slain students and students
who lost their property during the disturbance.
He said NANS was appealing to the State
Government to reopen the institution for normal academic activities
within the next one week and settle the hospital bills of the injured
students.
