Scholarship Description
The Institute for Transport Studies (ITS), Faculty of Environment, University of Leeds is offering a fees scholarship, to give a unique opportunity to an African student of outstanding ability, achievement and potential. The Institute is offering a fees scholarship worth £7500.
The scholarship will fund 50% of the fees for a student from Africa to undertake a full-time Masters degree programme at ITS. The scholarship forms part of the ITS mission to advance the understanding of global transport, via the development of skills and best practice. It is envisaged that the scholarship recipient will take up employment in the transport sector in their home country after the Masters programme, to apply their new skills in an area of identified need.
Eligibility
To be eligible:
  1. Applicants must hold, or expect to obtain, a bachelors degree equivalent to a UK first class or upper second class honours.
  2. Applicants must hold an offer (conditional or unconditional) of an academic place for an ITS Masters degree for the academic year commencing September 2013.
  3. Applicants must be designated as ‘international fee status’ by the University of Leeds, and be domiciled in an African country.

  • MA Transport Economics
  • MSc Sustainability (Transport)
  • MSc Transport Planning
  • MSc Transport Planning and the Environment
  • MSc (Eng) Transport Planning and Engineering

This will be a onetime fee reduction
Scholarship benefits
The scholarship is a 50% fee waiver for the 2013-14 academic year, to the value of £7500.
Method of Application
To apply for the scholarship applicants must:
a) Complete and submit the relevant scholarship application form, to include:
  1. a statement of up to 500 words which details how and why a Masters degree from ITS would enable the applicant make a difference to transportation in their country/region, and specifically to tackle a significant problem or issue;
  2. evidence of the applicant’s outstanding ability, achievement and potential;
  3. an outline of the applicant’s career aspirations.
  4. details of their funding situation, including existing funds which are available to them, scholarship applications where the outcome is known or awaited, and other funding sources being explored.
b) Provide a supporting statement from a referee [the scholarship referee should be additional to the academic referees].

Scholarship applications should be submitted to ITS no later than 13th June 2013
Please note:
Applicants for this scholarship will automatically also be considered by ITS for the ‘Transport the World’ Masters scholarship (for international students, £7500 fee waiver) and do not need to complete a separate scholarship application form.
Early application is encouraged. Shortlisted applicants will be notified by email in July.
