The Deputy Registrar (Academic Support Services), Mr. Emmanuel Dada
Obafemi, has been named the new Registrar of the University of Ilorin.
Fondly called “ED” by colleagues and friends, he takes over from the
incumbent Registrar, Mrs. Olufolake O. Oyeyemi, whose tenure expires on
April 28, 2013.
Mr. Obafemi’s appointment, which followed the recommendation of the
Selection Board constituted to assess applicants for the position of
Registrar, was one of the highlights of the decisions taken at the 136
th meeting of the University Council last Saturday (February 9, 2013).
The Registrar-designate, who joined the services of the University of
Ilorinon September 28, 1981 as Assistant Registrar (Information), is a
1977 graduate of the University of Ibadan. Mr. Obafemi has served, at
various times, as Senior Assistant Registrar and Principal Assistant
Registrar in various units of the University. In 2006, he was promoted
to the position of Deputy Registrar and he served in various units such
as the Establishments Office, College of Health Sciences, Students
Affairs Unit, Council Office and the Directorate of Academic Support
Services.
As Registrar, Mr. Obafemi will be responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for
theday-to-day general administration of the University. He will also
serve as Secretary to the University Council, the Senate, Convocation
and Congregation of the University. Born in Kabba, Kogi State, on
November 19, 1953, Mr. Obafemi had his primary education at St. Andrews
Primary School, Kabba between 1959 and 1966 before proceeding to the
popular Government College, Keffi (1967 – 1971).
The Registrar-designate also attended Abdul Azeez Attah Memorial
College, Okene between 1972 and 1973 for his A’ Levels after which he
gained admission to read History at the University of Ibadan between
1974 and 1977.
Mr. Obafemi also schooled at the National Institute of Public
Information, Kaduna (1981), the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria
(ASCON), Badagry (1995) and the Digital Bridge Institute, Abuja (2010)
for different Professional Certificate programmes.
Fresh from his national youth service in 1978, Mr. Obafemi joined the
services of the old Kwara State government and was posted to the
Ministry of Information, Youths, Sports and Culture as Information
Officer before joining the services of the University.
Mr. Obafemi is a member of the Association of Nigerian University
Professional Administrators (ANUPA), the Chartered Institute of
PersonnelManagement of Nigeria (CIPMN), the Nigerian Institute of Public
Relations (NIPR), and Fellow of the Institute of Human and Natural
Resources (IHNR).
An ardent lover of football refereeing, the Registrar-designate has won
several laurels in the course of his career as a referee. For instance,
in 1991, he won the Bournvita Award for the Best Football Referee in
Nigeria.Other awards won by the affable administrator include the Oyo
State Sports Writers Association of Nigeria’s (SWAN) Award for
Outstanding Performance as a Football Referee (1997), the Special Merit
Award for Dedication, Service, Honesty and Exemplary Commitment in the
discharge of duties as Member of the Referees Placement Committee of the
Nigerian Football League (NFL) (2007), Distinguished Ambassador of
KwaraState Football Referees (2008), Distinguished Personality Award for
Excellent Refereeing and Development of Refereeing by Kwara State All
Stars Family (2010), and Unilorin Senior Staff Association of Nigerian
Universities (SSANU) Award for the Uplift of Humanity and Empowerment of
Human Dignity (2012).
The Registrar-designate, whose hobbies include reading and swimming, is married and blessed with six children.
